Day 1 · What is worth more
Today’s reading: Proverbs 3:13-26
13Happy is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gets understanding. 14For her good profit is better than getting silver, and her return is better than fine gold. 15She is more precious than rubies. None of the things you can desire are to be compared to her. 16Length of days is in her right hand. In her left hand are riches and honor. 17Her ways are ways of pleasantness. All her paths are peace. 18She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her. Happy is everyone who retains her. 19By wisdom Yahweh founded the earth. By understanding, he established the heavens. 20By his knowledge, the depths were broken up, and the skies drop down the dew. 21My son, let them not depart from your eyes. Keep sound wisdom and discretion, 22so they will be life to your soul, and grace for your neck. 23Then you shall walk in your way securely. Your foot won’t stumble. 24When you lie down, you will not be afraid. Yes, you will lie down, and your sleep will be sweet. 25Don’t be afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it comes; 26for Yahweh will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being taken.
Proverbs 3:13-26 · World English Bible
For her good profit is better than getting silver, and her return is better than fine gold.
Context
Proverbs gathers wise sayings attributed mainly to Solomon, the king of Israel known for the wisdom he asked of God. The first nine chapters are counsel from a father to his son. In chapter 3, wisdom is presented as a person who offers long life, peace, and honor. The language is poetic: it describes the fruit a wise life usually brings, not a guarantee of wealth for every person.
This journey is about work, and it begins with a comparison of values. Happy is the one who finds wisdom, because her profit is better than getting silver. Before talking about productivity, salary, or career, Proverbs asks: what is worth more to you? Because whatever you value most will shape how you work.
Many people work only for the money. And money is necessary: it pays the rent, the groceries, the medicine, the children’s schooling. The Bible doesn’t look down on that. But Proverbs warns that there is something more precious than silver and gold: knowing how to live. A person can earn well and destroy their family, their health, and their conscience. Another can earn little and live with peace, honor, and purpose.
Notice how wisdom is described. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life. With her you walk securely, you don’t stumble, you lie down and your sleep is sweet. None of this shows up on a paycheck, but it makes all the difference in a working life. Whoever acts wisely doesn’t have to lie awake at night afraid of being found out, or of having harmed someone.
And where does this wisdom come from? The chapter itself answers at the beginning: trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him. All your ways includes the way of work. Biblical wisdom isn’t just cleverness for getting ahead. It begins with the fear of the Lord, with recognizing that God is present on Monday too, at the office, on the job site, behind the counter, in the kitchen, behind the wheel.
That doesn’t mean everyone who trusts God will always prosper financially. Proverbs talks about how life usually works, not about a contract with a profit clause. There are wise people who go through crises, unemployment, and loss. The central promise is something else: with wisdom, you will have solid ground under your feet, even when the landscape changes.
Over the next fourteen days, we will look at work through the eyes of Proverbs and a few Bible stories: diligence, honesty, words, plans, rest. Today, begin by asking God for wisdom. James says he gives it to all liberally and without reproach.
