Day 1 · What I don’t want
Today’s reading: Romans 7:15-25
15For I don’t understand what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do. 16But if what I don’t desire, that I do, I consent to the law that it is good. 17So now it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me. 18For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don’t find it doing that which is good. 19For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice. 20But if what I don’t desire, that I do, it is no more I that do it, but sin which dwells in me. 21I find then the law that, while I desire to do good, evil is present. 22For I delight in God’s law after the inward person, 23but I see a different law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity under the law of sin which is in my members. 24What a wretched man I am! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death? 25I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord! So then with the mind, I myself serve God’s law, but with the flesh, sin’s law.
Romans 7:15-25 · World English Bible
For I don’t understand what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do.
Context
Paul is writing to the Christians in Rome, a church of Jews and Gentiles he had not yet met in person. In chapters 6 to 8, he explains how the grace of Christ relates to the Law and to sin. In chapter 7, he speaks in the first person about the conflict between the desire to do good and the force that pulls the other way. Scholars debate whether he is describing life before or after conversion, but the passage ends in gratitude: “I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord!”
Maybe you’ve arrived here tired of making promises. You promised yourself, your family, God. You stopped for a few days, maybe for a few months, and then went back. The drinking, the cigarettes, the betting, the pornography, the food, the phone until the small hours, the purchase that didn’t fit the budget. Each of us knows the name of our own. And along with the habit comes a question that hurts: why do I do what I don’t want to do?
Paul asked the same question. The apostle who planted churches and wrote a large part of the New Testament confessed: I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do. He isn’t making excuses. He is honestly describing an inner division every human being knows. The wanting is there. The doing doesn’t follow.
This journey begins with that acknowledgment, not with a new promise. For a long time you may have tried to win with willpower alone, and willpower matters, but it has limits. Paul reaches the end of his and cries out: What a wretched man I am! Who will deliver me? The question shifts from “how will I manage this” to “who will set me free.” And that shift is what opens the door.
Notice that the answer comes right after: I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord! Paul doesn’t find the way out in himself. He finds it in a person. That doesn’t mean you won’t have work to do in the coming days. You will. But it does mean you don’t start alone, and you don’t start from zero. You start held by Someone who already knows your struggle and hasn’t walked away from it.
Over these 21 days, we’ll go slowly. We’ll name what holds you, understand how temptation works, learn to step away from what knocks you down, and look for people to walk with. If what you’re facing is already affecting your health, your work, or your family, also seek professional help: a local addiction or mental-health service, your doctor, Alcoholics Anonymous, or Narcotics Anonymous. Many of these services are free. Seeking treatment is not a lack of faith.
For today, this is enough: tell God the truth, without dressing it up. He isn’t shocked by what you’re about to say. Honesty before him isn’t the end of hope. It’s the first step of it.
To reflect onWhat habit is making you act against what you truly want today?
To live it today
- On a sheet of paper or in the app’s journal, write the name of what holds you, in a single word. You don’t need to show anyone yet. Just don’t hide it from God.
More questions
- At what moments of the day do you most feel the gap between what you want and what you do?
- Who near you also lives this struggle and needs to hear that they’re not alone?
Prayer
Praise
Thank you, God, for Jesus Christ. You know my divided heart, and even so, you don’t give up on me.
Surrender
I admit that I do what I don’t want to do. I hand this habit over to you by name, without excuses and without hiding anything.
Petition
Give me courage to begin this path honestly. Place the right people near me and don’t let me give up.
To memorize
