The Armor of God

Seven days to stand firm in the Lord.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having the utility belt of truth buckled around your waist, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having fitted your feet with the preparation of the Good News of peace, above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; with all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints.

Day 1 · Strong in the Lord: the belt of truth

Today’s reading: Ephesians 6:10-14

Context

Paul writes Ephesians as a prisoner; at the end of the letter he calls himself “an ambassador in chains” (6:20). He was probably under the guard of Roman soldiers, whose equipment he knew up close. But the image of the armor comes from the Scriptures first: in Isaiah, it is God himself who puts on righteousness as a breastplate and a helmet of salvation (Isaiah 59:17), and righteousness is the belt of the Messiah (11:5). The armor Paul describes is, above all, the armor of God.

After five chapters about grace, the church, marriage, family, and work, Paul writes: “Finally.” And his final subject is a struggle. The Christian life isn’t only peace and calm; there is real resistance. But notice the first command: “be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.” Before you put on any piece, you are reminded where the strength comes from. It isn’t born of your courage. It comes from him.

Paul also says who we are not fighting: “our wrestling is not against flesh and blood.” That protects your life from a common mistake. Your spouse is not the enemy. Your boss, the difficult neighbor, the relative who hurt you are not the enemy. People can do wrong and wound us, and sometimes boundaries are needed, but spiritual warfare is never a license to treat people as targets.

There is a real evil behind much of what we see, and the Bible takes it seriously. But it does so soberly. It doesn’t give us a map of demons or a list of rituals. It gives us armor. Four times in these verses the idea of standing firm appears. The goal isn’t to go out hunting evil; it is to remain standing in Christ when the evil day comes.

The first piece is the belt. With it the soldier fastened his tunic and supported the other pieces; without a belt, everything hung loose and got in the way. For Paul, this belt is truth. First, the truth of the gospel: who God is, what Christ has done, who you are in him. Jesus said the devil is “a liar, and the father of lies.” The weapon most often used against you may not be anything spectacular, but a lie repeated in a low voice: “God is tired of you,” “this will never change,” “you are alone.”

Then there is truth lived out. In chapter 4, Paul asks us to put away falsehood and speak the truth to one another. Small lies, half-truths, a double life: all of this loosens the belt. You can’t stand firm with your tunic hanging loose. Integrity is a protection, not a burden.

Today, tighten your belt. Ask God what lie you have been believing about him or about yourself, and look in the Word for the truth that refutes it. And if there is a lie you have been telling, this is a good day to start undoing it.

To reflect onThe first piece is truth. What lie, about God or about yourself, has been loosening your belt?

To live it today

  • Write in one sentence a lie you often hear inside (for example, “God doesn’t hear me”) and, next to it, a verse that tells the truth about it. Read it aloud morning and evening.

More questions

  • Who have you been fighting as if they were “flesh and blood,” when the real battle is something else?
  • Who near you is believing a lie and needs to hear, with love, the truth of God?

Prayer

Praise

Lord, the strength is yours and the armor is yours. You are the truth and you do not lie. I praise you because I can stand firm leaning on you, and not on myself.

Surrender

I hand over to you the lies I have believed and the ones I have told. Take from me the double life and the half-truths. I don’t want to fight against people; I want to stand firm in you.

Petition

Fasten your truth around me. When a lie comes whispering, bring your Word to my memory. And give me steadiness for the evil day, when it comes.
