Day 1 · It is not good to be alone

Today’s reading: Genesis 2:15-25

15Yahweh God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it. 16Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; 17but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.” 18Yahweh God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 19Out of the ground Yahweh God formed every animal of the field, and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called every living creature became its name. 20The man gave names to all livestock, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field; but for man there was not found a helper comparable to him. 21Yahweh God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. As the man slept, he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22Yahweh God made a woman from the rib which he had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. 23The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken out of Man.” 24Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh. 25The man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.

Context

Genesis 2 tells the creation story from another angle: after the wide view of chapter 1, the camera comes down into the garden. God places the man in Eden “to cultivate and keep it” and, for the first time, says that something is “not good.” The Hebrew word translated “helper” is also used in the Old Testament for God himself as the help of his people. The chapter ends with the first poem in the Bible and with a couple “naked, and not ashamed.”

In the first chapter of the Bible, God looks at what he has made and keeps saying: it was good. The light, the waters, the plants, the animals. Then, in chapter 2, in a garden still without sin, pain, or death, the words “not good” appear for the first time. Nothing there was broken. There was a man alone. Before any wrong existed in the world, there was already a need: we were made for one another.

God promises a “helper.” To our ears the word can sound small, as if it meant an assistant. But in Hebrew it is the same word used for God when the psalmist says his help comes from the Lord. It is not someone beneath; it is someone who comes to the rescue. And “comparable” means corresponding, standing face to face, on equal footing. God did not create a decorative accessory. He created someone face to face.

Notice the path. Before forming the woman, God brings the animals to the man, and he names each one. He sees every creature and realizes that none of them corresponds to him. Sometimes God lets us feel the lack before giving us the gift, so that we receive it as a gift and not as an achievement. The man sleeps; when he wakes, the answer is there. And he sings: “bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh.”

If you are single, widowed, or starting over after a divorce, this verse is not a sentence against you. Jesus lived single and was fully human. So did Paul. God’s answer to loneliness is bigger than marriage: the psalm says he sets the lonely in families. True friendship, a church that welcomes, brothers and sisters who sit at the same table. This journey is for you too, because every heart was made to love and to be loved.

If you are married, you may know another kind of loneliness: two people sharing the same house and living side by side, or back to back. Routine, bills, children, and phones slowly fill the space where you used to look at each other. The love that builds begins by recognizing that the person beside you is neither an extension of you nor an opponent. They are someone God brought to you.

Notice one more detail in verse 15: before all of this, God gave the man a garden “to cultivate and keep.” Those are good verbs for love. Love isn’t born finished, and it doesn’t keep itself. It has to be cultivated with small actions and kept safe from threats. That is what you will practice over the next fourteen days: not a technique, but the daily care of someone who plants and protects.

To reflect onWhere has loneliness been speaking loudest in you: in missing someone, or in the distance from those who are close?

To live it today

  • Write down the names of three people with whom you want to build stronger bonds over these 14 days, and pray for each of them by name.
  • Today, tell one of them something you thank God for in their life. It could be your spouse, a family member, or a friend.

More questions

  • In what area of your life have you been trying to be enough on your own, without letting anyone come close?
  • Who near you is living with a quiet loneliness and needs a visit, a message, or an invitation?

Prayer

Praise

Creator God, you saw the man’s loneliness before he knew how to name it. You are the help of your people, and you leave no one truly alone.

Surrender

I give you my loneliness, my expectations, and the relationships that are cold or wounded today. I don’t want to use anyone to fill the place only you can fill.

Petition

Teach me to cultivate and keep love. If I am married, renew the way we look at each other. If I am alone, surround me with a family of faith and true friendships.
